"7 Steps of Handwashing: Singapore's Guide"
In Singapore, where hygiene is paramount, understanding the correct handwashing technique is crucial. Handwashing is a simple yet powerful tool to prevent the spread of infections and diseases. Here are the seven steps of handwashing, as advised by the Singapore's Health Promotion Board, to ensure you're doing it right.
Why is Handwashing Important?
Handwashing is the most effective way to prevent the spread of germs and keep you and your loved ones healthy. It's especially important to wash your hands:
- After using the toilet
- Before eating
- After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
- After touching animals, animal feed, or animal waste
- After handling garbage
- After touching commonly used surfaces or objects
The 7 Steps of Handwashing
Step 1: Wet Your Hands
First, wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold). Turn off the tap and apply soap.
Step 2: Apply Soap
Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Make sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
Step 3: Scrub Your Hands
Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the "Happy Birthday" song twice. This will help you scrub for the recommended duration.
Step 4: Rinse Your Hands
Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
Step 5: Dry Your Hands
Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. Hand dryers can also be used.
Step 6: Use a Hand Sanitizer (When Necessary)
If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry. However, hand sanitizers are not a substitute for washing hands with soap and water.
Step 7: Turn off the Tap
Turn off the tap using a paper towel or your elbow to avoid re-contaminating your clean hands.
Handwashing in Singapore: A National Initiative
In Singapore, the Health Promotion Board has launched the "Wash Your Hands" campaign to raise awareness about the importance of handwashing. The campaign encourages everyone to wash their hands regularly and correctly to prevent the spread of diseases.
Remember, handwashing is a simple, yet powerful tool to keep you and your loved ones healthy. By following these seven steps, you're doing your part to maintain Singapore's high standards of hygiene and public health.
