Understanding AORN Nail Guidelines: A Comprehensive Overview

The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) has established comprehensive guidelines for nail care in the surgical setting. These guidelines, published in the AORN Journal, aim to minimize surgical site infections (SSIs) and ensure patient safety. This article delves into the key aspects of AORN's nail guidelines, providing a clear and concise overview for healthcare professionals.

Why Nail Care Matters in Surgery

Nails can harbor bacteria and fungi, which can lead to surgical site infections if not properly managed. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), SSIs are a significant cause of postoperative morbidity and mortality. Therefore, meticulous nail care is a crucial aspect of preoperative patient preparation.

AORN's Recommendations for Nail Care

AORN recommends that nails be clean, dry, and free of nail polish, artificial nails, and extensions before surgery. Here's a breakdown of their guidelines:

Nail Trimming: Nails should be trimmed short and smooth, with no jagged edges or cuticles.
Nail Polish: Nail polish should be removed at least 24 hours before surgery to allow for proper nail bed drying.
Artificial Nails and Extensions: These should be removed at least 24 hours before surgery due to the risk of infection and interference with surgical site preparation.
Hand Hygiene: Patients should wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water before nail care to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.

Preoperative Nail Care: AORN's Step-by-Step Guide

AORN provides a step-by-step guide for preoperative nail care:

Step	Action
1	Wash hands with soap and water.
2	Trim nails short and smooth, removing any jagged edges or cuticles.
3	Remove nail polish, if present, and allow nails to dry completely.
4	Remove artificial nails or extensions, if present.
5	Wash hands again with soap and water.

The Role of Nurses in Ensuring AORN Nail Guidelines

Nurses play a pivotal role in ensuring that AORN nail guidelines are followed. They should educate patients about the importance of nail care in preventing SSIs, perform preoperative nail care as needed, and document nail care in the patient's record.
