"CDC's Comprehensive Guide to Hand Hygiene: The Full Form"
By Michael Davis
AD
Hand hygiene is a critical aspect of infection prevention and control, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has established a comprehensive guideline, often referred to as the CDC hand hygiene full form, to ensure its effectiveness. This guide, titled "Guideline for Hand Hygiene in Healthcare Settings," provides evidence-based recommendations for healthcare personnel to minimize the risk of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).
Understanding the CDC Hand Hygiene Process
The CDC hand hygiene process involves five key steps, each designed to maximize the removal or killing of microorganisms. These steps are performed using either an alcohol-based hand sanitizer or soap and water.
Step 1: Wet
Wet your hands with water, turning off the tap using a paper towel or your elbow to avoid recontamination.

Step 2: Apply Product
Apply either an alcohol-based hand sanitizer or soap and water.
For alcohol-based hand sanitizers, apply the product to the palm of one hand (about 3-5 mL for adults, less for children), rub your hands together, and rub over all surfaces of your hands and fingers until they are dry.
For soap and water, turn the tap on with a paper towel or your elbow, apply soap, and rub your hands together to make a lather. Scrub all surfaces of your hands and fingers, including between fingers and under nails, for at least 15-30 seconds.
Step 3: Lather and Rub
Lather and rub your hands together to ensure all surfaces are covered.

Recommendations
Soap
Antimicrobial soap is not recommended as it may contribute to antimicrobial resistance. Non-antimicrobial soap is acceptable.
Alcohol-based hand sanitizers
Should contain at least 60% alcohol (v/v) and be stored in closed containers to prevent evaporation and contamination.
Hand towels
Single-use paper towels are preferred. Cloth towels should be changed frequently and laundered according to facility policy.
Proper hand hygiene is a critical component of infection prevention and control. By following the CDC hand hygiene full form, healthcare personnel can significantly reduce the risk of HAIs and improve patient safety.
