Hand Hygiene Audit Results: Boosting Infection Control
In the realm of healthcare and public health, maintaining high standards of hand hygiene is not just a recommendation, but a critical practice that saves lives. We recently conducted a comprehensive hand hygiene audit across our facilities and are pleased to share the results with you. This audit, conducted in accordance with the World Health Organization's (WHO) 'Five Moments for Hand Hygiene' guidelines, provides valuable insights into our compliance with best practices and areas for improvement.
About the Audit
The audit was conducted over a period of three months, involving all our healthcare facilities. It focused on the Five Moments for Hand Hygiene, which are: before touching a patient, before clean/aseptic procedures, after body fluid exposure/risk, after touching a patient, and after touching a patient's surroundings.

Compliance Rates
Our overall compliance rate stood at 82%, indicating a high level of adherence to hand hygiene protocols. However, we acknowledge that there is still room for improvement to reach our goal of 100% compliance.

- After touching a patient's surroundings (75%): This is a critical moment for hand hygiene as it helps prevent the spread of healthcare-associated infections. We will be reinforcing the importance of this moment through targeted training and reminders.
- After body fluid exposure/risk (78%): Although our compliance rate is high, we aim to reach 100%. We will be emphasizing the importance of immediate hand hygiene after any body fluid exposure or risk.
Our Approach to Improvement
Based on the audit results, we are implementing a multi-faceted approach to improve hand hygiene compliance:
- Targeted training for staff, with a focus on the areas identified for improvement.
- Installation of additional alcohol-based hand sanitizers in strategic locations, particularly near patient surroundings.
- Regular reminders and updates on our hand hygiene protocols through staff meetings and communication platforms.
- Increased observation and feedback from supervisors and mentors.
