"DIY On Guard Spray Recipe: Natural Disinfectant"

By Michael LeeApril 25, 2026

Are you looking for an effective and natural way to deter pests from your garden or home? Look no further than an on-guard spray recipe. This homemade solution is not only eco-friendly but also cost-effective. In this article, we'll guide you through creating an on-guard spray using essential oils, which are known for their pest-repelling properties.

Understanding Essential Oils for Pest Control

Essential oils are concentrated liquids extracted from plants. They contain powerful compounds that can repel or kill pests. Some of the most effective essential oils for pest control include:

Peppermint oil
Eucalyptus oil
Lemon oil
Tea tree oil
Cinnamon oil
Clove oil

These oils work by masking the scents that pests use to navigate and find food, disrupting their communication, or directly repelling them. They are safe for use around children and pets when diluted properly.

Basic On-Guard Spray Recipe

The basic on-guard spray recipe involves mixing essential oils with water and a natural surfactant to help the oils adhere to surfaces and leaves. Here's a simple recipe to get you started:

Ingredients	Amount
Water	16 oz (500 ml)
White vinegar	1 cup (240 ml)
Castile soap	1 tbsp
Essential oils (choose from the list above)	10-15 drops

Customizing Your On-Guard Spray

You can customize your on-guard spray by adjusting the essential oils based on the pests you're targeting. Here are a few examples:

Ants: Mix equal parts peppermint, eucalyptus, and tea tree oils.
Fleas: Combine lemon, eucalyptus, and clove oils in a 1:1:1 ratio.
Mosquitoes: Blend lemon, eucalyptus, and cinnamon oils in a 2:1:1 ratio.

Remember to shake the bottle well before each use, as essential oils can separate from the water.

Safety and Precautions

While essential oils are generally safe, they can cause irritation if used undiluted. Always dilute them with water and a surfactant like castile soap. Also, avoid using on-guard sprays on plants that are sensitive to essential oils, such as lavender and rose.
