By Ashley YoungDecember 23, 2025

Ever wondered how to express wealth or richness in American Sign Language (ASL)? ASL, like spoken languages, has its own unique way of conveying concepts like wealth. In this guide, we'll explore how to say "rich" in ASL, along with related signs and cultural notes to enhance your understanding.

Understanding "Rich" in ASL

In ASL, the sign for "rich" is quite straightforward. It's a two-handed sign that involves moving your hands from your chest outwards, as if you're showing off an abundance of something. Let's break it down:

Start with both hands near your chest, palms facing you.
Move your hands outwards and slightly upwards, as if you're pushing something away.
Your palms should end up facing forward, with your fingers spread wide.

Practice this sign in front of a mirror to get the movement right. It's important to note that ASL is a visual language, so the smoothness and size of your movements can convey different meanings.

Signing "Rich" in Context

Like in English, you can use "rich" in ASL to describe both monetary wealth and abundance in other aspects of life. Here are a few examples:

Rich person: To sign "rich person," use the "rich" sign and then point to the person you're referring to.
Rich country: To sign "rich country," use the "rich" sign and then sign "country" (both hands moving downwards like a slope).
Abundance: To sign "abundance," use the "rich" sign and then sign "of" (index finger moving in a circle) and the noun you're referring to (e.g., "food," "resources," etc.).

Cultural Notes

Remember, ASL is a language with its own culture and nuances. When signing about wealth, be mindful of cultural differences and avoid stereotypes. Not all Deaf individuals may have the same views on wealth or may express it differently.
