Understanding the Connection: Hypermobility and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)

Hypermobility and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) are two terms that often appear together in discussions about joint health and flexibility. While they are related, they are not the same condition. This article aims to clarify the difference between the two and explore their connection.

What is Hypermobility?

Hypermobility refers to the ability of a joint to move beyond its normal range of motion. It's a common trait, with some people being naturally more flexible than others. Hypermobility can be beneficial for certain activities like gymnastics, dancing, or playing some musical instruments. However, it can also lead to joint instability, dislocations, and injuries if not properly managed.

What is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)?

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a group of inherited disorders that affect connective tissues, which are the proteins that provide structure and support to various tissues and organs in the body. There are several types of EDS, but the most common is Hypermobility Type (hEDS), which is characterized by joint hypermobility. People with hEDS have a genetic mutation that affects the production of collagen, a protein that provides structure and support to connective tissues.

How are Hypermobility and EDS Related?

Hypermobility is a common feature of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, particularly in the Hypermobility Type. The genetic mutation that affects collagen production in people with hEDS also affects the connective tissues in their joints, leading to increased joint flexibility and hypermobility. However, not everyone with joint hypermobility has EDS. Hypermobility can also be a normal variant or a result of other conditions.

Differences Between Hypermobility and EDS

  • Cause: Hypermobility can be a normal variant, a result of other conditions, or an inherited trait. EDS, on the other hand, is always an inherited condition.
  • Symptoms: While both conditions involve joint hypermobility, EDS is also characterized by other symptoms such as skin hyperextensibility, tissue fragility, and various organ complications. Hypermobility, on its own, typically only involves joint issues.
  • Diagnosis: Hypermobility is often diagnosed based on a physical exam and the Beighton score, which measures joint flexibility. EDS, however, requires genetic testing for a definitive diagnosis.

When to Seek Medical Attention

If you or a loved one has joint hypermobility and also experiences other symptoms such as skin hyperextensibility, tissue fragility, or organ complications, it may be a sign of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. It's important to consult with a healthcare provider who has experience with EDS for a proper evaluation and diagnosis.
